* The Real Reason Why We Have Evil Leaders – Sermon by Metropolitan Demetrius

in the name of the father and of the son
and of the holy spirit
amen I'm back from a very long trip and
I arrived and I spent a couple days and
I went on a trip
again and glory to God we're back here
able to hear the vigil services and S
our
prayers as we
should
there's a reason why God gives us over
to
evil
rulers and the reason for that according
to St anastasius of Persia and many
fathers is because of our sins or more
specifically because of our unrepentant
sins this is the main
problem and people like to point
out the bad qualities of the
rulers but in doing so we forget about
our own bad qualities and what it is
that we need to fix for
ourselves the church teaches us this
because the church the fathers Our
Savior himself tries to bring us to an
understanding of ourselves and tries to
get us to understand that we are not of
this world that we have pain in this
world because we're Exiles we are in
Exile and all of the struggle and all
the pain is there to remind us
that we're not in our true home and that
there is an enemy who fights us who
doesn't want us to
achieve what is necessary for us to
achieve our Eternal habitation our place
in Paradise because from now from even
now our savior promises that he will
prepare a place for us in paradise and
so those who have gone before us the
Saints and the Souls of the
righteous try to prepare for
us and the evil demons also do the
same and last Sunday and this
Sunday and yesterday Saturday we heard
concerning the three youths ananas Asar
and missel and Daniel the Prophet the
three great youths these are great men
Giants of
God we have the commemoration of the
ancestors of God the commemoration of
the for the ancestors of God and the
forefathers of our
savior
and really the the
focus is these three children and
Daniel the kakon the dismissal him which
starts great are the achievements of
faith is concerning the three children
in Daniel the sinaran that we heard is
concerning the three children in
Daniel in fact every mat service that we
come to we hear concerning the three
children and most people don't
understand when they hear the E me the
oses of the Canon which talks about oh
ye children concerning the
children and the children and the whole
thing which happened with the children
is a great
foreshadowing of what happens in the
Feast of the Nativity and also what
happens on
pasca for we know that in the scriptures
there are many types foreshadows
Parables images
personifications many things prophecies
which prepare us because often times
we're not ready we're not ready unless
we get a preparation we have to prepare
ourselves for any type of an event
especially the most important events and
so in the particular case of our
savior's
birth we were so not ready that we
needed generations of
preparation generations of
preparation and still things were
understood Darkly and in a
shadow but in any case those who had
ears to hear heard as our savior says he
that ha ears to hear Let Him
hear and so the three youths were
actually in the Palace of King nebuchad
noar and he was not a not not a True
Believer he was not a Jew they were in
the Babylonian
captivity and yet they were lawful
servants
until they were forced to do something
which was against the
faith just like us we're supposed to be
uh law- abiding citizens unless there is
a problem with the
faith if something is forced on us that
is against our faith we cannot accept
it and so the youths did already make
their confession of Faith before they
were tested greatly because in the
palace it was a great honor to actually
be not only be with the King but even to
see the king if you saw the
king you were privileged people could
not Peak to see the king or else they'
get in deep trouble
and so they were anas R missa were
actually before the king and they ate
the great food that was made there
imagine what nice food there was there
they would not eat that
food they would not eat the food that
was not permitted but they ate the food
that was
fasting legumes vegetables
fruits so they were fast
fasters and these fasters then were told
that they were supposed to worship the
image which NEOS had set up and neb noer
commanded that
everybody worship this
image and then it was reported to him
that these three youths would not
worship this
image and so they got in
trouble naturally
and now since this is extremely dactic
I'm going to read it to
you not the entire thing
but the King Nebuchadnezzar said to the
youths to be
ready whensoever you hear the sound of
the trumpet and pipe and harp and
sackbut and solder and Symphony and
every kind of music Fall Down and
Worship the golden
image you know the fathers talk about
the
idols and they liken it to our passions
because passions are idols and many
times we give into this and we become
idolators in
a different type of a way by Falling for
our
passions but there is repentance for us
and so we must repent
the king called an as shedrach mishak
and and
abago and this is what their response
was to King
Nebuchadnezzar we have no need to answer
thee concerning this matter for our God
in the heavens whom we adore whom we
worship is able to Deliver Us From The
Burning fiery furnace and he will rescue
us from thy hands O
King but if not be it known to thee Oh
King that we will not
worship thy Gods nor worship the image
which thou has set up so whoever did not
worship the image was to be put into the
fiery furnace they knew this and they
started off by saying we don't we have
no need to answer you concerning this
matter because God is above all and the
king is not
God he but they say that God is able to
deliver them from the burning fiery
furnace
but if he
doesn't be it known to thee Oh King we
will not adore thy
Gods so they had
Faith they knew that God could do
whatever he wanted to do but God in his
righteous judgment chooses what is best
they didn't know exactly what God was
going to choose nebuchad noos was filled
with
anger and he gave orders to heat the
furnace seven times more than was want
until it should burn to the uttermost
and then he commanded the men the three
children to be put into the fiery
furnace then those men were bound with
their coats and caps they were bound
with all their clothing because they
could have been burned more were cast
into the midst of the burning fiery
furnace for as much as the king's word
prevailed and the furnace was made
exceedingly hot seven times more than
was
want and the people that were
outside many that were close to the
furnace were were killed by the
heat these three men fell bound into the
midst of the burning fiery furnace and
walked in the midst of the flame singing
hymns to God and blessing the
Lord then ananas stood up and prayed on
this manner opening his mouth in the
midst of the fire he
said and here I'm going to add that
there are two parts to this
prayer the first part is when they go in
and they're in the midst of the
Flames they're in the midst of the
flames
and it's obviously a
miracle but it's not exactly clear
what's going to happen since it's a
pretty scary thing to be in the midst of
the
flames and so they start ananas is the
one that stood up and said blessed art
thou oh Lord the god of our fathers and
praise and glorified is Thy Name unto
the ages for righteous art thou and all
that thou has done for
us and all thy works are true and
upright of th ways and all th judgments
are true here we see that they do not
question question God ever one of the
worst things is to question
God my blessed grandmother always us to
say glory to God for all the bad things
glory to God for all the good things he
knows what he's
doing judgments of Truth hast thou
performed in all things which thou has
brought upon us and upon the holy city
of our father Jerusalem but for in truth
and judgment hast thou brought all these
things upon us because of our
sins for we have sinned and transgressed
we have transgressed in departing from
thee in all things wherein we have
greatly sinned and thy Commandments have
we not heard nor have we given heed nor
done as thou Hast enjoined us that it
might go well with
us and these three youths take upon
themselves the sins of the entire nation
the entire people even as Christ did
they're blaming themselves these fasters
these people who are following the
law the first thing that they do here is
they acknowledge God God's judgments are
true and all this huge temptation is
because of our sins we've departed from
thee we've greatly sinned and thy
Commandments have we not heard nor have
we given heed nor done as thou has
enjoyed us that it might go well with us
consider this and consider our
self-justification consider how often
and what kind of a sickness this is and
like I I say it's the automatic response
where we absolutely have to make sure
the end result will be that we we are
right and although we will never say we
are perfect because it sounds so stupid
to say that we act as if we
are and there's always some type of an
excuse and they have no excuse and they
acknowledge their sinfulness and they
even acknowledge the sins of the people
but not pointing to the people taking it
upon themselves we've not heard thy
Commandments we've transgressed by
departing from thee who says this are we
saying
this and all that thou has done to
us and all that thou has brought Upon Us
in judgment that is true H has thou done
them and thou has surrendered us into
the hands of the Lawless enemies of most
hateful apostates and to a King that is
unjust and the most wicked in all the
Earth God delivered them to the hands of
this evil King because of their sins is
what they're
saying this is the
reason the reason why we're given over
to evil rulers is because of our
sins and now we're not able to open our
mouth shame and reproach are we become
for thy servants and for them that rever
thee can you imagine we're not able to
open our mouth the humility of these
three youths who are in the
fire and who are not
burned shame and reproach are we become
because the closer we be the closer we
come to God the more we see our
stupidity and our
filthiness the further
we are from God the more our mind is
filled with
thoughts distractions Which pull us away
from the
Lord sometimes they're ours A lot of
times they're the
demons and they continue their prayer
Deliver us not up utterly for thy holy
name's sake neither dis anal thou thy
Covenant and cause not thy mercy to
depart from us for Abraham's sake thy
beloved and for Isaac's sake thy servant
and for Israel as thy Holy One we read
this in the in the hours this the n
to whom that is Abraham to whom thou
this say that thou would multiply their
seed as the stars of heaven and as a
sand on the shore of the sea for oh
Sovereign Master we have become the
least of all the nations and are humbled
in all the Earth this day because of our
sins and there is not at this time any
Prince nor Prophet nor leader nor whole
burnt offering nor sacrifice nor
oblation nor incense nor place to bring
first fruits before the and to find
Mercy what could we possibly do to find
your mercy we can't offer anything
there's nobody to deliver
us except for
God but in a contrite soul and in a
spirit of humility may we be
accepted and that's it that's a full
sentence in a contrite soul and in a
spirit of humility may we be
accepted we don't have anything else to
offer just accept our contrite heart and
our spirit of
humility as in whole burnt offerings of
rams and Bullocks and in 10 thousands of
fat Lambs so let our sacrifice be
acceptable before thee this day and let
it be performed Hereafter before thee
for there is no shame to them that trust
in thee yay now we follow thee with our
whole heart and we fear thee and we seek
thy
face I'm stressing the words so that we
can digest
them now we follow thee with our whole
heart and We Fear thee and we seek thy
face oh put us not to
shame but deal with us according to thy
tenderness and according to the Mt of
thy mercy rescue us according to thy
wondrous works and give glory to thy
name O Lord and let all them be
confounded that show evils to thy
servants and let them be put to shame
and be deprived of all their power and
let the strength of them be
shattered and let them know that thou
art the Lord the only God and glorious
throughout all the
Earth the prayer starts off with giving
thanks and glorification and
acknowledgment of this big Temptation
which Came Upon them because of their
sins they repent in the end they ask to
be delivered and to be helped in the
circumstances and the King's
servants which had cast them in ceased
not from heating the
furnace and the flame poured out above
the furnace 9 and 40 cubits and it broke
through and enveloped in Flames those
the calans which are found around the
the
furnace but the angel of the Lord came
down to be with aaras and those with and
those that were with him in the furnace
and he drave the flame of the fire out
of the furnace and he made the midst the
furnace like a whistling wind that
beareth Dew and the fire touched them
not at all nor brought any grief nor
troubl them then the three as that of a
single mouth praised and blessed and
glorified God in the furnace
saying blessed art thou Lord the god of
our fathers and supremely praised and
glorified are thou unto the ages and
then there's a long prayer and that's we
chant oh praise the the Lord and
supremely exalt him unto all the
ages we chanted on Holy Saturday we
chanted it
now in
theas as I
said in Mountain service we're always
remembering these youths but now for the
Feast of the
Nativity there are a couple of hymns and
there's one hymn which says the
furnace moist with due was the IM was an
image and figure of a Wonder past nature
for a burn not the youths whom it had
received even as the fire of the godhead
consumed not the virgin's womb into
which it had
descended so this was a foreshadowing
and a type of The Descent of the Holy
Spirit of Christ into the womb of the
mother of God for when the angel
descended then the Flames were parted
then it was very clear then they were
not on their own even though they were
not on their own from the very
beginning the Lord made his
appearance and it says in the Psalms we
went through fire and water and thou
Hast led us to the land of
refreshment because
both this event and the event of Moses
passing through the
waters are prefiguring the birth of
Christ and they also prefigure
pasca because as the Lord descended down
into
Hades so he descended into the fiery
furnace and that's why on Holy Saturday
we chant these
hymns of the three youths so on this
day let us come closer to understand
understanding who these great three
youths are and have a veneration for
them and pray to them together with the
Prophet
Daniel and let us understand where we
are and what's upcoming the great feast
of the Nativity of Christ even as the
fire of the God had consumed not the
virgin's womb into which it had
descended so were the youths in this
fiery
furnace because God is a consuming fire
as it says in
scriptures and also in this life all of
us need to go through fire and water we
went through fire and water and th us
lead us into the land of
refreshment we have to be cleansed in
this
fire as iron as it says put into the the
Flames we read in the scriptures so do
we become firm so we become that which
we are which we are supposed to become
and those are The Temptations that we
must undergo in this
life when we're undergoing those
Temptations when we're in the midst of
the fires let's look at the attitude of
the three youths the right
attitude these things have come upon us
because of our
sins and the more we give into certain
types of thoughts of the evil demons the
stronger these thoughts become as you've
heard me say before the more Authority
that demons get over our thoughts and
our
minds and then it can get too late and
we're
stuck and we don't know how we got there
and then I've heard it so many times I
don't want to be like this I don't want
to think like
this well we have to be careful from the
very beginning we have to cut out the
thoughts from the very
beginning we just have a few more days
left this is the last week before the
Feast of the
Nativity May the holy Youth and anas
hasar missel be a great example for us
may they help us and teach us how we
should act in our Temptations as I said
when we're in the midst of Temptations
remember their attitude remember their
prayer and if you're going through a
Temptation perhaps it's good for you to
find this
prayer and read
it blessed art thou oh Lord and all that
thou has done for for us and we know
that this has come upon us because of
our sins but Thou Art able to deliver us
and that's what we hear in the Kion and
that's stressed in the kakun Thou Art
able if it be thy
will God can do whatever and sometimes
certain things come upon us because it's
the will of God if it's the will of God
we will be delivered we will be
delivered in the right time but all
things must be according to God's will
if things don't go according to God's
will it's just going to be a disaster
for us so we should be praying thy will
be done in all
things may God's mercy come upon us may
his holy will be done in our lives and
may He deem us worthy to celebrate the
holy Feast of the Nativity of Our Savior
